Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management – Category 4

This category examines how a company selects, gathers, analyzes, manages and improves its data, information and knowledge assets and how it manages its information technology. The category also examines how a company reviews and uses reviews to improve its performance.

Exploration and production knowledge and data management are core to a successful E&P company. D.J. Simmons both determines and refines the data and information it considers pertinent for measuring progress against strategic objectives and plans by relying on the outcomes of team deliberation at weekly E&P staff meetings and at the annual strategic planning retreats. These deliberations support organizational alignment and instill appreciation for any given metric’s indicative role in achieving performance excellence.

Although small in size, Simmons uses a variety of leading-edge technologies and reporting systems. Collectively, they provide the team with keen insights into the company’s performance. Systems include telemetry-fed production databases, digital dashboards, a variety of accounting systems and Microsoft SharePoint™. Company shareholders and business partners alike enjoy the benefits of these analytical tools.

As part of the monthly cycle of producing digital dashboards, appropriate department heads are responsible for developing and/or reviewing written analysis explaining the current month or quarter’s trends. By involving several departments in producing and/or reviewing written performance analysis, Simmons quickly identifies its money-making and money-losing wells and isolates the specific factors giving rise to the reported results.

D.J. Simmons also heavily depends upon its lease management and record-keeping systems as well as a geological database. These two systems support each other in the quest to identify opportunities for future reserve development.
